Hold it up to the light and play around with it's orientation. You can 'replicate' the cloth and the attenuation by using one layer of generic black speaker cloth, and the outer layer of tan 'vintage cloth' like what is used on guitar cabs. They are an 8.5' cone set in a 10' frame. They needed to be refoamed but unfortunately there are no foam surrounds still in production which match these strange woofers. This is wildy contradictory of what modern grill's are supposed to do! :) Listen to them, with the cloth off - if you like it, that's great - but I did want to chime in on the attenuation 'thing'. They were the 3rd pair of speakers which Advent produced (1973-1977). There is a later tweeter that is a bit smoother in response, but still uses the dual layer grill (IIRC). This causes distortion and poor performance. Cloth and paper surrounds can become brittle. Constant vibration, time and the environment cause foam and rubber surrounds to degrade. The surround is the outer suspension part of the cone. I think the amp was the TA-N80ES and the speakers came to life on his setup. My friend and I had a blast for about an hour playing with them on Sony ES separates. They must be around 15-20 or so years old, but they have each had their 12 woofers replaced with new ones. The most common problem with speakers are rotted, torn or damaged surrounds. Very good speaker for most music (not hip hop if you can call that music) I had the chance to do an A-B with a pair of the 2k Sony ES speakers in the mid 90's. Due to the nature of that tweeter - and I'll assume you've got the original 'dual dome' on the masonite board, mounted at a 45 deg angle - he used two layers of cloth, holes offset slightly, attenuate some frequencies. I am currently using a pair of older Advent floor standing speakers (no model numer but says 'The Advent Loudspeaker' on the back) that my Uncle gave them to me a while back for the front speakers in my setup. Gives just enough lift to improve the sound tenfold. Beautifully cut and easy to assemble, looks splendid with my Advent loudspeakers.
LARGE ADVENT SPEAKER FOAM FREE
It is an integral part of the design, if you are going for "what Mr. Purchased item: Large Advent Speaker Stands Made of Solid Walnut Free Shipping. A word of 'note', maybe even 'caution': do try and salvage the original cloth. I'm a bit late to this party, but I've got some experience with renovating the Large (well - any of the early Kloss designed) Advents.
